I was fascinated by the ways in which fantastical worlds could come alive through visual magic, appearing so realistic and inviting that any sense of disbelief was suspended. I pored over behind-the-scenes books and documentaries to learn as much as possible about the craft, which led me to become the artist I am today. Through my practice, I experiment with set design, photography and other disciplines to construct my own fantastical worlds in response to places and stories that inspire me, as well as daydreams and memories that linger in my mind. To create my worlds, I predominantly hand-build miniature-scale sets, often through processes such as moulding and casting. I then light and photograph these sets, bringing my imaginary creations to visual reality. I also experiment with cyanotype printing, landscape photography and 3D imagery using photogrammetry. Through the craft of world-building, I strive to create immersive spaces where people can temporarily step outside reality. I am particularly interested in the ability of fantasy and fairy tales to inspire individual interpretations and associations. I aim to create works that depict magical, peaceful places where the imagination can roam, creating experiences in which people can stop, wonder and smile. Awards and exhibitions 2026 Open Studios 2026, Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester “10,000 hours” group exhibition, The Little Studio and Image Print Centre, Laundry Studios, London “Inside/Outside” group exhibition, co-curated with Hanne Mannheimer, Cuckoo Farm Studios, ColchesterElected as the next Chair of Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester"Open conversations" group exhibition, Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester2025 Open Studios 2025, Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester Artist studio holder, Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester Group exhibition with Der Grief Studio, Kinrise, Birmingham 2024 "Shared Grounds" group exhibition with Collective 22, London Gallery West, London Artist talk, Fabrica, Brighton 2023 Selected as the winner of Fabrica's In Between Gallery Open Call “Ephemeral Bloom” solo exhibition, New Art City Selected as a winner of the Belfast Photo Festival 2023 open call, photo book category Took part in the Camberwell Multiples Fair alongside Revolv Collective, Camberwell College of Arts London 2022 “rivers, signals, mists” group exhibition with Collective 22, Brighton Photo Fringe, Phoenix Art Space Featured in PhEST Festival, Monopoli, Italy Revolv Award winner Shortlisted for The Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 164 Shutter Hub YEARBOOK 2022 online exhibition Summer Online Exhibition, Colchester Art Society “By the Sea” group exhibition, Oasis, Frinton-on-Sea Art for health & wellbeing group exhibition, Research & Development department, Northwick Park Hospital “22” group exhibition, East Meets West, FORMAT 22 Presents, Derby 2021 MA Photography Arts Degree Show, Ambika P3, University of Westminster FOLIO Showcase, London Gallery West, University of Westminster Highly commended by Genesis Imaging for the Shutter Hub YEARBOOK Awards 2021 International College Photo & Film Exhibition, Incheon Open Port Hall, Incheon City Selected for the East meets West Masterclass Programme 2021/22, GRAIN projects Shortlisted for The Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 163 Shutter Hub Membership Bursary Award Shutter Hub OPEN 20/21 London exhibition BJP International Photography Awards Singles Show, Seen Fifteen 2020 Single image winner in the International Photography Awards from the British Journal of Photography Featured on the Photograd Online Gallery, November 2020 Selected as one of the 100 photographers for the Shutter Hub YEARBOOK 2020 publication Shutter Hub YEARBOOK 2020 online exhibition MA work-in-progress exhibition, London Gallery West, University of Westminster 2019 Runner-up for the Stanley Kubrick photo competition run by Photofusion and The British Film Institute https://christianjago.co.uk/Ephemeral-Bloom Thu, 21 Sep 2023 14:14:32 +0000 Christian Jago https://christianjago.co.uk/Ephemeral-Bloom Ephemeral Bloom View 3D exhibition in New Art City This project is divided into six chapters: 1. The Storm 2. Athrú 3. Spring 4. Summer 5. Autumn 6. Winter Project introduction “Ephemeral Bloom” takes us on a journey of change through an imagined valley called Athrú. We witness how this space evolves over time, how it is affected by the seasons, and how natural processes contribute to its circle of life. The project is a reflection on nature and the lessons it has taught me about my mental health. I started this work wanting to heal my internal struggles, looking for answers in the world around me. Nature is an inspiring and complex force, linking all life forms in a delicate equilibrium. It is defined by change, constantly adapting as the earth evolves, and has reminded me of my own growth and perseverance. Just as nature resiliently faces challenges, so too can I navigate the landscape of my mind. By channelling my emotions and experiences into the idyllic image of a valley, my work reveals a nexus of life and colour, representing the sanctuary I find within nature. But as spaces shift and converge, a fragile and fleeting world is suggested, reflecting the temporality of our interconnected planet. Nature is remarkable for the way it supports and sustains itself, and numerous studies show that connecting with it has profound benefits for our mental health. Recognising my place in its vast web has helped me to feel less alone with my struggles, reassuring me that I am part of something bigger. Consequently, my work has evolved into a personal space of refuge. The story of Athrú is divided into seasons, both of nature and the mind. Seasons mirror a duality of constancy and mutability - as nature seasons, so does the mind, each evolution an echo of growth. The narrative of the seasons teach us to cherish moments of bliss, and remind us of the transient nature of struggles. Learning about nature has helped me to understand the threat we pose to its rhythms and cycles. Our species’ inclination to control and contain often disturbs the natural symphony of change and nurturance within and around us. To prevent irreversible damage, we need to learn how to pause and retreat, both from ourselves and our planet. Athrú resembles a space where human interference does not exist, offering a window into a possible future. Ultimately, nature has taught me to embrace change and to acknowledge the gradual process of healing. Connecting with it has reminded me of my responsibility to our symbiotic relationship. Embodied in a constellation of images, “Ephemeral Bloom” is both a personal memoir and a love letter to our shared world. Above: Exhibition in New Art City, 2023. https://christianjago.co.uk/Ephemeral-Bloom-The-Storm Wed, 13 Sep 2023 15:05:27 +0000 Christian Jago https://christianjago.co.uk/Ephemeral-Bloom-The-Storm Chapter one: The Storm Part of Ephemeral Bloom View 3D exhibition in New Art City Above: A grid of 94 cyanotypes and 49 marbled watercolour papers. The genesis of my project traces back to a storm that carried grains of sand from the Sahara to the UK. Captivated by this phenomenon, I carefully gathered the dust and began to create cyanotypes. The delicate fragments, which had voyaged thousands of miles, ignited my curiosity, prompting me to learn about their origins. Locked within the dust is phosphorus, a vital nutrient for plant life. Storms such as this have been found to transport over 22,000 tons of the nutrient each year to the Amazon, essential for the survival of its diverse rainforest. The storms are a crucial component of the Earth’s system, and an inspiring example of nature supporting itself. The story of Athrú begins with a similar storm. Countless particles of life-giving dust take us on an airborne journey to the valley. They appear like stars, charting an expansive constellation, igniting worlds into existence. To me, the storm represents the inception of this project, marking the cusp of my journey to connect with nature and learn about myself. <img width="3000" height="3000" width_o="3000" height_o="3000" It was formed over millions of years, evolving from a landscape battered by meteorites, lightning and lava flows, to an idyllic sanctuary supporting a diverse ecosystem. Without developed civilisations, it moves in perfect synergy with the flow of nature and time, providing a space of balance and nurture for all life within it. Valleys are often perceived as safe havens - sheltered by mountains and hills, abundant with water and food. For me, Athrú represents the destination I have been searching for in my journey of healing, and my perception of nature - a force embodied by life that is shifting, surprising and reassuring. The tides dance, In an eternal rhythm, While the sun shimmers upon the waters surface, Like a curtain swaying in the breeze. From boundless obscurity, Devoid of light, Emerges a blue paradise of vitalisation, A poignant reminder, That magic can thrive in darkness. Flowers bloom, adorned with vivid colours, colliding in an effort to bathe in the sun. Trees awaken from their winter slumber, bearing fruits for animals, who fly and scutter eagerly in search of food. Cherry blossoms fill the air with sweet fragrances, delicately flourishing for a few short weeks. This is a time of nourishment, serenity and transience within the valley. In many examples of literature, spring is associated as a time of love and new beginnings. It suggests a heavenly time for the world, when nature springs into life and days begin to extend. For me, it signifies a period of inner peace, a time when I feel hopeful for the future. The world appears alive with change, and the sun brings comforting warmth. It is my favourite time of year, and this project has reminded me to appreciate its fleeting beauty. <img width="2250" height="3000" width_o="2250" height_o="3000" Birds sing joyfully throughout the trees, while other creatures converge at rivers and streams to drink their cool, clear waters. Roses of every hue bloom in mass, attracting diligent bees to their nectar. With the days longer, the ecosystem teems with activity, as nature prepares for the coming seasons. And as the heat rises, storms gather high above forests, bringing vital rain and crashes of thunder - the sound of an intricate force providing for the land. Summer is intrinsically linked to the element of fire, as the sun lingers higher and longer in the sky. It is often perceived as the season of leisure and adventure, a time when we step away from our responsibilities. For me, the season instills a quiet calm within my mind, allowing me to contemplate my challenges. It is also a time when I explore new spaces within nature, deepening my connection to its vast web. However, each year I am witnessing a changing summer, as temperatures and rainfall fluctuate, serving as a reminder of our threatened climate. <img width="2250" height="3000" width_o="2250" reaches forward, Surrounding me in its tender embrace. It is almost silent, And between calls, I can hear the rustle of leaves, I’m immersed in a sea of green, Gazing into the sprawling life. My eyes are drawn to the graceful flowers, Radiant pinks, purples, lilacs and blues, And all at once, a connection dawns on me, Binding me to the world that surrounds. To the gentle flutter of wings, To the comfort of summer’s embrace. Within that fleeting instant, Everything slips away, And I’m lost in the moment. Above: Photographic prints submerged in resin, with alcohol inks. I hear the wind, A soft summer breeze, Waltzing through a field of gold. Colours fall, Slowly through the sky, Like the sea retreating, As an electric blaze ignites. The cool air brushes my skin, Guiding my steps, Propelling me forward, In sync with the world around me. Trees, having absorbed energy from the summer sun, shed their crimson and golden leaves, returning nutrients to the soils below. Animals prepare to hibernate for the coming winter, foraging for building materials and collecting food reserves. In the rivers, salmon from the ocean battle against currents to ascend upstream, embarking on their final journey to bring new life. The days grow shorter, and the light changes, signalling nature’s coming slumber. In literature, autumn has been aligned with a sense of melancholy, signifying the end of summer and the approach of winter. It is also a time of maturity, as crops are harvested and birds begin their migration. To me, this season harbours a sense of apprehension about what lies ahead. It is short, seeming to pass in an instant, allowing only a brief period to prepare my mind for the darker days. However, I’ve also taken many leaps of faith at this time, making it an important season for inner growth - a time for me to release the past and chart a new course. <img width="2250" height="3000" A thick blanket of snow morphs the land into an otherworldly realm. It appears still and empty, devoid of life, suspended in time. Days are short, and icy winds from the ocean make conditions unforgiving and challenging. But look closely, and all is not as it seems. Animals, asleep inside their hand-built homes, share warmth and companionship. Some remain awake, resilient against the cold, navigating the terrain with careful precision. Trees stand dormant but alive, drawing upon a vast subterranean network of energy. Dawn and dusk grace the skies with the year’s most vibrant hues, illuminating the frozen rivers and glittering snow with enchanting vitality. This season marks a phase of perseverance amidst silence, the culmination of the valley’s preparations. Nature endures harsh, cold conditions during winter, and shorter days with less light. In literature, it has often symbolised feelings of sadness and trepidation, a period when life feels mentally demanding. However, it also serves as a time of natural retreat, offering an opportunity to bond with loved ones and reflect upon the year gone by. For me, winter invariably presents challenges, as my thoughts become entangled with apprehensions and anxieties. I often feel internally stagnated, unsure of the way forward. Nevertheless, this project has shown me the resilience and beauty of nature during this season, instilling me with reassurance and hope that I can find clarity amidst the chaos. Ultimately, the seasons ebb and flow, a reminder of our ephemeral existence, teaching us to live in the present and gaze toward the future. <img width="2250" height="3000" width_o="2250"
